Would you pay much attention to anyone that played a harp and wailed along to it?I went to my local music store, hoping to find something new by Natalie Merchant, failing that I would look for something by Half Man Half Biscuit, failing that I would just look p1ss3d off and sound grumpy. I couldn't believe it, nothing new by Natalie, couldn't believe it as it had been so long since she had done anything new. Rather than leave the store I asked at the desk if she had anything due for release, you never know. There wasn't anything listed on the computer, Adam, the person dealing with me asked me if I'd heard anything by Joanna Newsom, told him I hadn't. He went to look, but came back saying they must have sold the copy they had, so I left, maybe I picked something by The Fall as I hate to leave empty handed. A couple of weeks later I called in again, Adam saw me,he only knew me from the previous time I had been in, but remembered that he had suggested Joanna Newsom, and told me he now had a copy in. Off he went and brought a copy over to me whilst I was perusing other sections, he told me that as he had recommended it that he would give me a full refund if I didn't like it, I said that probably wouldn't be necessary as my eldest son tends to like much like I do and if I didn't like it I would pass it on to him, but I thanked him for his offer, paid for it and off I went. I had decided to do some cooking when I got home, so whilst I was preparing food in the kitchen I put the disc on. She was certainly unlike most things I had ever heard before, I would liken her to a hyperactive Bjork, sometimes sounding very childlike, the lyrics really struck me, some very ethereal and haunting, all very enjoyable and certainly something that was going to be a taste I would endear myself to. The very last track, Clam, crab, cockle, cowrie is my favourite from this CD, really is beautiful. I have bought everything that is available by her and she just gets better and better. Well, would you listen to anyone that plays a harp and wails along? Give her a try, I'm sure you'll be pleasantly surprised. I phoned Adam up the following day and thanked him, I had never had anyone suggest any other artist when I'd been in to a music store before, they just seem to take your money and wrap the goods. I put a tape together and gave it to Adam a couple of weeks later as a thank you. Finally, it's a good job I like her as my son can't stand her!
