Once Brian had started feeling a bit more comfortable he started opening up about his background. He was a musician, had his own recording studio in the basement of his house and he was a songwriter. He mentioned ‘off the cuff’ one day both he and his partner had written a million record seller. I said something like ‘You’re takin’ the pi… Michael aren’t you’ He started laughing and explained he and his partner wrote for a recording studio in the 70’s and Sarah Brightman was recording ‘I Lost my Heart to a Starship Trooper’ but she hated the ‘B’ side. It just so happened Brian’s lyrics where sitting in the studio (right time, right place scenario) and were chosen for the ‘B’ side of I Lost My Heart…. still a million record seller.
The guy was an encyclopaedia of music and musicians and a superb guitarist to boot. But above all he had one story that blew me away; when he was in his teens, 1960’s I guess, they had a band called Riot Squad and guess who sung and played the sax in the group… David Bowie…
Again with the subtlety of a flying mallet I said ‘ahh, fu… ‘He just laughed went to a cupboard and pulled out the original poster of one of their concerts… It just blew me away!!! I found the poster, Brian's the guy at the front with David Bowie above him, with some more info about Riot Squad on the net and showed them to him... it was Brian's turn to be blown away.
Anyone reading this might be disappointed that I haven’t put on ‘I Lost my Heart to a Starship Trooper’ by Sarah Brightman, but instead I’ve dedicated this one to Brian, one of my favourite Bowie tracks… Brian 'the croke' Prebble' it was an honour to know you my friend...
