I was 18 and it was the longest, hottest summer. I had just bought my first car, a T Reg Ford Fiesta Ghia, white with a black vinyl roof. It drove well enough, it had that sort of nasal sound to it's engine that you could recognise as a Fiesta from miles away, the racket of the tappits confirming the guess as it got closer! It was a 'proper' car, with a mechanical engine that smelt of grease and oil and grinding metal and I loved it.What I loved most was the freedom it gave me and I would drive off on 'Get Lost' nights, just driving 'coz I could, onwards for a couple of hours, then, finding a different way home, just using roadsigns. It didn't occur to me that maybe I should have taken a map, nor that calling the AA back then wasn't easy - mobile phones were a dream of the future, at least for teenagers! I didn't care, I had my stereo, my rock classics cassette and a rewind button (although back then, it was little short of being a lever!). The compilation was superb, plenty of the best rock available at the time but the tune that I loved best was Don't Fear The Reaper. I was at a stage in my life when the future was just a promise, the present was just a laugh and the past was just best forgotten, so really, what was there to fear? Now, looking back, I guess it was lucky that I never broke down somewhere really obscure, but at the time that was half the thrill, wondering would I ever make it home? Funny, sometimes I still ask that same question.......
