Heroin

Artist: The Velvet Underground
Genre: Rock
Decade: 1960's
Title: Heroin
Author: Andy Campbell

Anyone remember a time before drugs were a problem to society? From a personal point of view, drugs have always been just that, personal! In the early 80's there was no heroin scene visible.before you knew it ,it was everywhere and they were even making adverts highlighting the dangers.Who can forget "I can handle it,I've just got a touch of flu this week"?

Throughout the decade people became hooked, stole, begged, borrowed to varying degrees and success, some just died.

Where was I whilst the streets became polluted and dirty? In Kirkdale cemetery usually.there would be between 4 and 10 of us hiding from the living world amongst the gravestones and the aged and rotting flowers. In the early days it would be me,Skin,Tez P,Lee 'sourface' Colins,Joe Bow and Bongo though this grew and changed over the years to include Beezo,Gingy an numerous hangers on.My dad hated all the nick-names and used to say "It's Mary,Mungo and Midge at the door"

I'd hung around there from an early age when too young to understand why my mum was angry with me for bringing her flowers and her name spelt in little lead letters I'd peeled off various gravestones.

Our choice of escape was usually canabis, though often at the weekend we would take LSD as well, making some strong if not quite accurate memories! Although part of a larger drug based community,it did seem that the 'smack heads' were universally reviled and rightly so in my mind.Until I heard this song.At first it just seemed another meandering slow song but once I knew what Lou Reed was actually saying everything changed. This song gives more insight into the internal pain or anguish of a drug users life than any other I've heard, though 'hurt' by the nine inch nails comes close, even maybe explaining why they turned to drugs in the 1st place?
