makes me feel really emotional this song, it's one I clearly remember from my childhood.we lived in a village in Derbyshire and every Tuesday we use to walk 2 or 3 miles to our great grandmothers' house with my mum. there'd be me my brother and 2 sisters. the village we lived in consisted mainly of new council houses, to re-house people from the slum that we'd been born into.....and was now re-visiting. that was a back to back house on the main route between Chesterfield and Sheffield, sarcastically named Coronation Terrace.......... a whole world away from the 'Coronation' which ended with the word Palace, probably some town planners idea of sarcasm! to the rear of the house was the main Chesterfield to Sheffield railway line, between us and the railway line was the outside toilet.........no one spent much time in there...........at least the fumes from the steam train kept the fumes from other 'steaming' things at bay................I'm trying not to sound too offensive.....but the conditions had to be seen to be believed. one consolation was I was a train spotter..........understandable in an era when steam trains were worth looking at, a thing of majesty. so, we'd visit great grandma, the walk home took a different route, we'd usually go through the fields, back in the days when farmers' fields were much smaller than they are today, there'd be many stiles to cross, ears of corn to run ones fingers through..........then mum would get a headache.........she always did when walking through fields with poppies in, something my eldest son also suffers. we'd walk behind thew back of the Bakery, with the lovely aroma of fresh bread being baked, in the day before the new 'Chorley Wood' method of mass producing bread came into being, this was when bread had real crusts on and was usually sold uncut. and all the while my mum would have her radio on and this song would often be played, we didn't have tape recorders back then, we were in the hands of the BBC and only heard what they wanted to play, but they still stick in the memory.......................guess that's where the 'emotional' bit comes in.........funny thing nostalgia. ray.............................in Batley.
